I have known about this for about two weeks, but it has only now become declassified information. I am going to be a father!! This is something, or better said, someone, that we have been hoping for, and we have been blessed beyond measure. Thank God for last minute, pre-deployment 3 day passes! This wonderful woman has been such a blessing to me and everyone else she meets, I am eternally grateful for her presence in my life. I must admit a bit of the jitters did hit when the reality of the impending responsibility hit me, but I look forward to it. I am one of many who will have the experience of a child coming while away at war. There are several men with pregnant wives at home in my battalion alone. It is one of the many sacrifices that go with the job. I know that my wife will handle it beautifully as she does everything else. The words that keep popping into my head regarding fatherhood are the same ones that I have often thought about regarding leading men in combat. They are the same words uttered by Alan Shepard, the first US Astronaut launched into space: “Dear Lord, please don’t let me screw this up.” Once again, I am blessed beyond all measure. I have another item to add to the list of things worth fighting for.
